Improvement.
Upgrading the Showground and Megalong Hall.
The Megalong’s Hall and Showground act as our community’s social and event hub. They also play a role in fundraising events. With so much use and attention, we have set up an MVCLA subcommittee in charge of improving these valuable assets, in cooperation with the owners, Blue Mountains City Council. Recently, a group of local volunteers built a pizza oven to support events, with materials and know-how donated by fellow Megalonians. The bigger picture is to create a masterplan with BMCC to bring these facilities into a shared future our community continues to be proud of.

Cultural Burn.
We have established a working partnership with indigenous community leaders and organisations to better care for our land and improve its resilience in the face of climate change. One of these initiatives brings together our volunteers at the Megalong Rural Fire Service and Firesticks to conduct a series of controlled Cultural Burns to improve biodeversity and reduce bushfire hazards, and to learn from thousands of years of traditional knowledge.

Road Subcomittee.
The Megalong Valley is in the unique position of being served by a single sealed road leading back up to Blackheath. Recent extreme weather has highlighted our vulnerabilty to being cut-off from the wider community, and the social and economic cost to our neighbours and businesses. An MVCLA subcomittee was formed to advocate for improved connections in and out of the valley, and to work with local and state government agencies to ensure better outcomes for all.
Bush Telegraph.
Engineered on behalf of the MVCLA by locals, for locals. In the creator’s own words:
“The Bush Telegraph is an app that allows you and your community to share information about emergency incidents.
The purpose of the Bush Telegraph is to support communication within small / isolated rural communities about incidents like road closures, tree falls, floods, etc. If anyone posts an incident on the app, everyone else in the community with the app gets a notice on their phone, including map location, short description and photo. Crowd-sourced and real time!”
